Should the electoral college be abolished?
No, the electoral college ensures representation of the whole country instead of just major cities
It was created as a way to give representation to slaves who could not vote so that the Southern States would not be dominated by the Northern States whose population had less slaves and more voters.
It was never about cities vs. rural. In fact when the country was founded it was mostly rural not urban. New York only had 33,000 people, Philadelphia 28,000, and Boston 18,000. Charleston and Baltimore were the only other two cities over 10,000 people. At the founding of the country no state had more than 10 votes and three of them had that, and each state had a minimum of 3 votes so the disparity was nothing like we see today with the large populations states of California, Texas, Florida, and New York.
We amended the constitution to get rid of counting blacks as 3/5 persons for the purpose of the electoral college apportionment and we now give blacks the right to vote. The Electoral College no longer serves the purpose it was crated for and needs to be abolished so when we elect our president each citizen has an equal vote.
