If I'm reading this right, they had a factor adjusting blacks as having better kidney function than others because a major study found higher creatine levels due to more "muscle mass" and assumed it was a population wide statistic.
So having "better kidney function" as a baseline made them less likely to get a transplant than non-blacks.
