The Biden administration has revoked export licenses that allow Intel and Qualcomm to supply Huawei with semiconductors as Washington increases the pressure on the Chinese telecoms equipment company.
The move by the US Department of Commerce affects the supply of chips for Huawei’s laptop computers and mobile phones, according to people familiar with the situation.
The commerce department confirmed to the Financial Times that it had “revoked certain licences for exports to Huawei” but did not name which US companies would be affected.
“We continuously assess how our controls can best protect our national security and foreign policy interests, taking into consideration a constantly changing threat environment and technological landscape,” said a spokesperson for the department. “As part of this process, as we have done in the past, we sometimes revoke export licences.”
One person familiar with the situation said the commerce department had notified the companies that would be affected, but did not provide details.
With every sanction it hastens China's chip industry and eventual independence. Sanctions don't work in a globalised economy anymore. The likes of Russia and China can buy examples from the market, copy the designs etc. It is only a matter of time. The progress China in particular has made with chips is undeniable.
Tech sanctions only work if and only if:
1) the Chinese must be idiots without any knowledge to develop technology on its own (goes against reality, although many people in the west believe it, therefore doomed to fail).
2) the suppliers/sellers are willing to cut off 30-50% of their sales to satisfy national security concerns. But after the inevitable mass lay-offs at Intel and other suppliers, what good do those sanctions do?

Selling consumer laptops with American designed chips is now "national security"?
Hahaha, you gotta love American attempts at kabuki theatrics just to pretend this isn't good 'ol protectionism.
Rules for thee but not for me, same as it ever was.
