For years now, Israel has had to deal with Hamas targeting civilians, firing hundreds of rockets and missiles in towns and cities, and now the worst they have had to offer has been peaked in the massacre of 7 October. Now Israel has finally had enough. A ceasefire at this point would ensure Hamas remains in control of Gaza, leaving the door open for them to reorganise and replenish, and for the same thing to happen in a never-ending cycle of war. There is no way Israel will tolerate an enemy as irrational as Hamas on their border after the absolute carnage they caused. And the sooner the Gaza Strip is rid of Hamas as a governing body, the better it will be for both them and Israel.
Furthermore, Hamas still holds over one hundred Israeli and foreign hostages as a bargaining tool. For Israel, a single hostage in the hands of their enemy is too many and rescuing them is a race against time. But Hamas can afford their own people dying by the thousands, treated as expendables, or in their own words, "martyrs" in the cause of jihad, as fodder for enemy fire, and as a tool to damage Israel's diplomatic reputation. It's tragic that the Palestinians of Gaza are trapped in this terrible situation, but when Hamas is out of power, there will (hopefully) never be a need for another war like this in the region again. It's about time.
